Sorry for the lateness of this post. It’s been marinating on the back-burner for quite some time now. But late though it is, it’s a good post-mortem, especially when we consider where we are currently and how we got here.
Evangelical Christians have been taught to love politics. We’ve all heard it. It’s our Christian responsibility to vote, make our voice heard, and yes, stand for righteousness – that is, except when righteousness interferes with our conservative brand of politics.
The “State” of the Church
Sorry for the play on words, but it fits. The church more and more is becoming like the State. And it’s definitely destroying the state of our testimony. Can anyone recall a time in recent memory in which our politics was more polarized? Can anyone remember a time when there was more corruption in government? You have to go back to Richard Nixon to come close.
But the difference then was that the voters really cared about leaders following the law. They were shocked and abhorred by the charges brought against Nixon. The corruption of the Trump administration has been far worse and amazingly, the guys who elected him still unconditionally stand by him.
And who are all these loyal minions? Why it’s evangelical Christians, of course! They made no secret they intended to elect an evil man, arguing God not only allowed it, but claimed God supported it. Anyone remember Jerry Falwell Jr.’s endorsement of Trump? “In my opinion, Donald Trump lives a life of loving and helping others as Jesus taught in the great commandment.” Really? Who’s the bigger liar, Trump or Falwell? And no, that’s not a trick question!
Or remember that timeless defense, “God can use an evil man for good“? So let me get this straight. I’m supposed to believe that the none of the 250 million Christians in the U.S. could find a single, good man to vote for? There just wasn’t one anywhere in the nation? Really? You’re kidding me, right?
How about Mike Pence? Trump slept with a porn star, was heard saying all sorts of sexually vile things about women and was completely unrepentant about all of it. And still we can’t find a single candidate more suitable? Really? C’mon man!
Loving the Lies
Everyone knows Trump’s the biggest liar in American politics. He’s still lying about a stolen election that was neither stolen or his. Everyone knows it. Even Christians know it. Nearly 18 months after the election, there’s still not one shred of credible evidence of voting fraud. NONE! And still evangelicals stand by this liar. Worse, they support his lies.
Sorry folks, but conservatives and Republicans just aren’t that dumb. They are smart, capable, astute, hard-working people. If there was fraud, they would have found it looong ago . . . They’re just not that dumb and liberals/Democrats just aren’t that smart. Could it be that we evangelicals are simply the dumbest sheep in God’s flock? C’mon man! Get a grip!
And please don’t float that tired argument that Christians have to vote for conservatives so that Roe v. Wade is overturned! Everyone knows we sold out to get conservative justices. Sometimes I think Christians would sell their grandmother into the sex-slave trade to overturn Roe. Yes, opposition to abortion is an important part of Christian testimony, but it doesn’t outrank truth or righteousness!
And now look where we are. The Republican party is loaded with Donald Trump “mini-me’s” who are as reprehensible, dishonest and corrupt as their political father. And with them, so is the evangelical church! These are not just liars. Like their leader, they are intent on doing evil. That’s right, intent! We will not be able to stop them.
The One Truth Among All the Lies
And here’s the one truth among all these lies: None of this, I repeat, none of this would have happened apart from the church! That’s right, without the church’s unwavering support of Donald Trump, none of this would have happened! He would never have been elected.
In fact, if Christians en masse had called their Senators and insisted they impeach Trump because of his unrighteousness, think how much different things would be today. The Senate would have impeached him out of fear of losing the church’s vote, and we’d have had Mike Pence as our President! That’s right, we could have had a Christian as our President!
More than that, we could have had a government that actually stood for righteousness. Everyone holding office would know that if they behaved unrighteously, they’d lose our support so they wouldn’t dare behave like they do now. We’d not have all these evil people in office, or lining up to run for office!
But when given the chance (twice I might say) to take a stand for righteousness and godliness, what did we do? Like a mob we shouted, “No, give us Barabbas!” Crucify Pence and give us Barabbas!
God forgive us. We have no clue what we’re doing!
