Dear Mike Pence:

Like you, I’m an evangelical Christian. But I must say up front how deeply disappointed I am with you.

Your Decision to Team with Trump Violated God’s Law

From the moment you made your decision to run with Donald Trump I lost all respect for you. Yes, I still pray for you, but not as you might think. In running with Donald Trump, you knowingly trampled God’s commands under foot. We both know it. We both know Paul’s testimony:

14 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? 15 What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? 16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? 2 Corinthians 6

There is no excuse for yoking yourself not just  to an unbeliever, but to the worst of unbelievers. Donald Trump couldn’t be less Christ-like. And yes, we both know he has no interest in becoming a Christian. You can pretend to take the high ground and say “I’m praying for him” but our Lord said:

6  “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces. Matthew 7

Funny thing is, that’s exactly what the Donald did to you! And yes, you earned it. For four years you tried to peddle the illusion of a loyal, respectful, adoring subordinate to Trump. You tried to sell the con that this is the appropriate way for Christians to behave. 

But Paul shows what is proper Christian behavior in 2 Corinthians 6, right after warning us against yoking oneself to unbelievers. “Come out from them and be separate”. “Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you”. This is the behavior you should have modeled for believers. But you couldn’t resist elevating yourself to a position of power and privilege, even if done at a cost to Christ.

Your Fawning Loyalty was Simply Idolatry

Your theatrically staged loyalty was idolatrous. Your sin is not new. It’s a replay of Adam’s sin, the idea that you know better than God. You can eat of that tree, you can reform that lying snake that misrepresents the truth at every turn. Such self-confidence in your own abilities and wisdom is simply idolatry. It’s elevating your wisdom above God’s.

Didn’t you also love to quote “I’m a Christian, a conservative, and a Republican, in that order”? It’s the “in that order” that reveals more idolatry. Yes, you love God, but you also love conservative politics and the Republican party. Yes, you can serve Jesus and Buddha too!

Your Tenure in Office Revealed Character Failures

If your groveling fealty wasn’t bad enough, your self-exile to the shadows showed you lack the courage to make the tough decisions. You’re a political animal, plain and simple. Everyone saw it. Constantly distancing yourself from all the bad behaviors, lying, incompetence, corruption, insults and tantrums.

You sought enough distance to avoid the whiff of the pig-pen. Till January 6th came up. Then the spotlights were so hot there was no shadow to hide you. It’s not like you stepped up. More like God took away your hiding places, leaving you exposed. That’s the thing about God. You can’t win against Him. He’s the Master of lex talionis. He will see to it you reap what you sow . “Do not be deceived. God cannot be mocked” (Galatians 6:7).

Yes Mike, you made the right decision that day. But some are giving you too much credit. One must ask, did you made it for the right reasons? After all, if you had jumped in and helped your seditious overlord, it would have been the end of your political career forever! Better to “self-exile” to the shadows again and maybe you can successfully emerge later – like you did while serving your “Chaos King“. (Funny thing though. The Ancient Jews thought God brought order, sin brought chaos and Satan was of course, the Chaos king. See the irony, Mike?)

A False Repentance from a Failed Christian

When you decided to run with Trump, you picked Barabbas rather than Christ. On January 6th, your base picked their Barabbas (Trump) and demanded you be crucified, at your bosses behest! That’s the funny thing about Lex Talionis.

Your boss tried to destroy democracy. He lied incessantly and his biggest lie was the election was stolen. You know for a fact it wasn’t. You know it was legitimate. But have you defended democracy? Why not volunteer to give testimony to the January 6th Committee? Why the silence?

You knew about the fake slate of electors. You know more about Trump’s insider efforts than anyone. But rather than going to the committee, you send your staff. How gutless. And isn’t that what you did when faced with tough questions during your Vice-Presidency? Send out your underlings while you remained safely in the shadows?

I thank God for true patriots like Cassidy Hutchinson who have the courage you lack. The courage to speak the truth when the truth really matters and where the consequences can be greatest. She can speak the truth with a clear conscience. How can you sleep at night given your silence? In good conscience, how can you return to work with such corrupt characters in your own party?

And now? You won’t let the January 6th committee distract from Biden’s failed policies while praising Trump’s record? And didn’t you say no one has lied in office more than Biden? You should read: We Become What We Worship, by Kenneth Beal. You’ve loved the liar Trump, and now you’ve become the liar you worship.

It all shows you haven’t repented. Any appearance of change or repentance is done only in pretense (Jeremiah 3:10). You’re still that idolatrous harlot who can’t see how reprehensible you are. You’re the dog that returns to its vomit (2 Peter 2:22, cf. Proverbs 26:11). But everybody else sees it. You’ve failed, Mike. Time for a course change.

A Call to Change

You yoked yourself to a lying, narcissistic fascist and now your party and the conservative movement is fully infected. That’s the disease you spread. You were one of the early spreaders. Now your party and their conservative beliefs have become America’s enemy. Your party won’t allow its members to stand in opposition to it. Everyone has to bend the knee and show it obeisance. It’s a party that has no conscience, no ethics, no morality. It is time to

It’s time for true repentance. It’s your “Moses Moment”. It’s time you stopped trying to politically free conservatives from the shackles of liberalism and started to save America from the conservative Christians whose ambitions are religious fascism. Time to call out Trump and all his corrupt mini-me‘s for what they are: Lying racists seeking to destroy democracy by suppressing voting rights.

It’s time to come out from them, be separate from this idolatrously unclean thing. It’s time to spend some time in the wilderness of Sinai, spend some time with God, get your head straight and learn God’s ways to give others true freedom. Take a page from Chuck Colson. Abandon politics, stand for truth and build the Kingdom of God.

Moses refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, preferring to be mistreated with God’s people (Hebrews 11:24-28). His decision made him greater than all the Pharaohs. That’s what might await you, Mike . . . if you repent, stand up and boldly speak the truth.

I’ll be praying for you, Mike. But until you repent, I’ll be praying the same prayer as when you joined Trump:

May you feel the birth pains of your heart’s desire, only to see your greatest ambition stillborn.
